Pecs in southern Hungary is the 2010 European Capital of Culture. The Hungarian News Agency MTI has just announced that Compagnie Marie Chouinard will participate in one of several dance programs Pecs is hosting during the year. Pecs2010 – Modern dance, ballet and folk on programme

Budapest, January 17 (MTI) – Modern dance, ballet and folk dance from Hungary and abroad all have a place on the city of Pecs’s European Capital of Culture programme in 2010.

The Pecs Dance Marathon – International Youth Festival and Folk Workshop will take place between April 26 and May 1, coinciding with World Dance Day. Students will show other national dance cultures in the mornings, and festive programmes will take place in the city’s pedestrian streets and squares in the afternoon. In the evenings, international galas will be staged in Jokai Square.

Michael Flatley will bring Lord of the Dance, which mixes contemporary and traditional Irish dance and music, to Pecs’s Lauber Stadium on May 4.

The 4th International Dance Festival of Pecs will take place in the local National Theatre and the square in front of it from September 20 to 26. Independent productions, as well as big names from Hungary and abroad are on the programme, including the Maribor Ballet from Slovenia, Canada’s Compagnie Marie Chouinard, the Vertigo Dance Company from Israel, Japan’s Umeda Hiroaki, the British troupe Motionhouse Dance Theatre, Ballet Preljocaj from France and Hungary’s TranzDanz.

Contemporary dance productions from Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Slovenia and Serbia will be in the spotlight at the Central European Dance Platform to take place on November 25-28.

At the end of 2010, Hungary’s Pal Frenak Company will premiere Across in Pecs. The piece, which contrasts the ideal beauty of youth with the beauty of different generations, will show on December 4.
