Coach Lenke Szathmary dies at 92

The Canadian women’s gymnastics world has lost one of its pioneers. Lenke Szathmary (Legany) has died at the age of 92. She was for many years the gymnastics coach at St. Catharines Collegiate.
Born in Hungary, Lenke Szathmary, survived the challenges of what turned out to be a 6-year sojourn in a German DP camp before she was able to emigrate to Canada in 1951. She made Welland her home. After working on a farm and then in a factory on a sewing machine, Szathmary eventually managed to have her Hungarian credentials recognized. Read more
Canada’s Emily Csikos helps Canadian team to beat Hungary

Canada’s current women’s team has been playing particularly well. In the recent Canada Cup women’s water polo tournament, Canada’s Emily Csikos scored five goals to ensure a Canadian victory over Hungary. Read more

Canadian to coach Budapest hockey team

Glen Williamson of Canada has become the new head coach of the Hungarian first-division ice hockey team of Vasas Budapest Stars, the club reported on its website on Tuesday.
Williamson, who signed a one-year contract with the club, earlier worked for the NHL team of Winnipeg Jets as assistant coach and for the Los Angeles Kings, another NHL team, as talent scout.
Williamson was the national coach of the Japanese men’s team in 2001-2002, and head coach of the Berlin Polar Bears in Berlin and the Lugano Panthers in Switzerland.

The Janyk family of Whistler, B.C. promises to give the 2010 Winter Olympics in British Columbia a strong Hungarian Canadian connection. Their story spans three generations dating back to the 1930s and 1940s in Hungary. Britt and Michael, Janyk, the 27 and 25-year-old children of Bill and Andree Janyk of Whistler, B.C., are being touted as potential members of the Canadian Olympic alpine ski team. Read more

Like so many Hungarians fleeing after the 1956 Revolution, Agnes Laing escaped by foot across the border with Austria. It took four days to reach the border. For security reasons the family split: Agnes’s father and her sister left together and Agnes left with her mother. At six and a half she was well prepared for the trip: she knew that, if stopped by the Russians she had to pretend to be going to the country to recuperate after chickenpox. Read more
